Responsive Design 101

I’m a big fan of the webahead podcast over on 5×5 and  having recently heard the interview with Luke Wroblewski and read his book Mobile First. I was inspired to go and learn more.  Luke’s latest post  is a fantastic way to get an understanding of responsive design and the basic principles.  Luke says ~ ”Through fluid grids and media query adjustments, responsive design enables Web page layouts to adapt to a variety of screen sizes. As more designers embrace this technique, we’re not only seeing a lot of innovation but the emergence of clear patterns as well. I cataloged what seem to be the most popular of these patterns for adaptable multi-device layouts and added one I’d love to see more of. ”

Airbnb

I spent the past few days living it up at the 7th Dublin Web Summit (#dws7). Lost more on that to come. One of the sites that kept coming up in conversation was Airbnb . Airbnb lets you rent out your house, apartment or living space. They handle all the cash and look after the social proof element of the service. If either the guest or the home owner doesn’t live up to their side of the bargain you wont get a look in next time. It’s rare that a web service comes along with such a great new idea. Checkout the video below if you haven’t seen the site before.

I’m thinking of using the site whilst I move back in with my parents to start my own start-up :)
