I have written very little. I’m currently in the Mid West working on a new website for my company. We joined up with a US company last year. I flew into Columbus Ohio via Chicago with a colleague of mine. We are spending 6 nights in Ohio and then moving onto Chicago for five nights.

We are meeting lots of great people in Ohio. the place is very different than I would have expected. The grass is really green and the place is really quiet. Going for some food and drinks now after work so that should be great fun.

Heading for Chicago on Friday for the FITC conference. Hope to hit the Wendella boats and John hancock whilst I’m in Chicago. Having a great time.

All the insiders in Ireland are backing Lisbon. Their message is poisonously patronising. Those opposing it were dismissed as “loo-las” by Bertie Ahern and branded as brainless by the nation’s sycophants-in-situ, the big employers group, Ibec. Join the loo-las. Wear the insults as a badge of honour. A battle is being waged between the insiders and the rest. Ordinary people are puzzled. Precisely as was planned by the Lisbon propagandists.

Last week I was all set I had heard Sinn Fein on the radio saying vote No to Lisbon. The usual Sinn Fein bullshit came out and it was highlighted that they have always hated Europe. I had heard nothing from the government or opposition but gave them the benefit of the doubt. Then during the week I heard Shane Ross who I respect very much and Jo Higgins on Newstalk agreeing that a no vote is better for Ireland and Europe. Having done some research for myself I have decided I’m voting No.

My natural instinct to always oppose Sinn Fein out the door. Although I do also like the idea of the country giving the finger to those government Muppet’s. Actually I did vote for the Greens so they are not all bad. Even Libertas who have been painted as a bunch of crazy people by the likes of Dick Roche make allot of good points. the clear solution is a no vote to help the economy in the short term and force a renegotiation of a treaty that is good for everyone in Europe. The old adage that we have done well in the past so let others have a go is true, but should those others be 82.5 million Germans or should it be the more under developed eastern European countries? I think this enlarged prosperous Europe is our best option.

The key points given by Libertas for voting No are given below.

1. Creates an unelected President and a Foreign Minister of Europe

The new President and Foreign Minister for Europe will be appointed by the European Council by qualified majority vote. Although many of the terms and conditions of these roles have yet to be decided, they will be committed through the Lisbon Treaty to “drive forward” the agenda of the Council and discussions have already taken place to provide a presidential palace and executive jet for the President.

2. Halves Ireland’s voting weight while doubling Germany’s

The Lisbon Treaty would implement a new system of voting by the European Council which is primarily based on population size. This means that Ireland’s voting weight would be reduced from 2% at present to 0.8% if the Treaty was implemented, while Germany’s would increase from 8% to 17%.

3. Abolishes Ireland’s Commissioner for five years at a time

The Lisbon Treaty proposes to reduce the number of Commissioners to two thirds of the number of member states. This would mean that, on a rotating basis, Ireland would have no seat for five years out of every 15 in the body that has the monopoly on initiating legislation. This would clearly affect a small country like Ireland to a far greater extent than, for example, Germany which is having its voting weight doubled under the Treaty.

4. Opens the door to interference in tax and other key economic interests

Article 113 of the Lisbon Treaty specifically inserts a new obligation on the European Council to act to avoid “distortion of competition” in respect of indirect taxes. The proposals for a common consolidated tax base and the commitment of the French government to pursue it combined with a weakening of Ireland’s voice in Europe through the loss of a permanent Commissioner and halving of its voting weight represent a clear and present danger to our tax competitiveness.

5. Hands over power in 60 areas of decision making to Brussels

The Lisbon Treaty provides for more than 60 areas of decision making from unanimity at present to qualified majority voting. Some of those areas include decision-making on immigration, sport, culture, transport and the appointment of the European President and Foreign Minister.

6. Gives exclusive competence to Brussels over International Trade and Foreign Direct Investment

For the first time, under the Lisbon Treaty foreign direct investment would become an exclusive competence of the EU as part of its common commercial policy. This means that the tools which have been used so successfully by the IDA to attract tens of thousands of jobs to Ireland will become the sole preserve of the European Union and the Irish Government will have to seek permissions

7. Enshrines EU law as superior to Irish law

On June 12th we will be voting on the 28th amendment to the Irish Constitution which clearly restates the following:

11° No provision of this Constitution invalidates laws enacted, acts done or measures adopted by the State that are necessitated by the obligations of membership of the European Union referred to in subsection 10° of this section, or prevents laws enacted, acts done or measures adopted by the said European Union or by institutions thereof, or by bodies competent under the treaties referred to in this section, from having the force of law in the State.”

8. The Treaty can be changed without another referendum

Article 48 of the Treaty enables changes to be made to it after ratification without the constitutional requirement for another referendum in Ireland. This is confirmed by the independent Referendum Commission on its website which states: there “may” be a requirement for a referendum to implement such changes.

This goes for popular blogs. It is very beneficial to spend time on this rather than trying to get that one viral that may never break out. Also try a plugin like Seoquake which is a powerful tool for Mozilla Firefox and for Internet Explorer, aimed at helping web masters who deal with search engine optimization and internet promotion of web sites. Seoquake allows user to obtain and investigate many important SEO parameters of the internet project under study on the fly.

Death Cab for Cutie have hopped into the passenger seat of one of those Black Cab Sessions. The thoughtful Pacific Northwest rockers are poised to score their first-ever No. 1 album with the just-released Narrow Stairs, and here Ben Gibbard and Chris Walla give a strong acoustic rendition of one of that album’s highlights, the sunny loss-of-innocence song “No Sunlight”. The sunshine streaming onto Death Cab’s shoulders through the black cab’s windows is actually a good evocation of the gleaming warmth of childhood, which Gibbard describes: “When I was young lying in the grass/ I felt so safe in a warming bath/ Of sunlight, of sunlight.” The actual sunlight in the video pretty much stays there, even as Gibbard sings matter-of-factly about the sunlight– and the optimism inside of him– dying doornail dead. Hope the harmonies cheer these guys up, but not before Gibbard writes a few more like this one.
The Album is amazing
This session is amazing
The band are amazing

The guys over at FastUpFront have posted on the trend to “go green” which in their words “has been leaving its footprint in countless industries”.

They have a very good article which highlights ways that even the smallest company can make a difference, without large budgets. Small businesses that typically have limited resources to invest in things like renewable energy or environmental business consultants can still have a positive effect on the environment without making a huge investment of time or money. Here is a “how-to” for small businesses looking to give to the environment.

This article is particularly interesting as I am currently working on a policy for my job.

So thanks guys for the article
