Sölden is a small village in Austria with some of the best views and slopes in Europe

Traveling to Sölden in Austria took 11 hours in all door to door. Leaving at 5.30 on Thursday the 17th of April we arrived at our Hotel Gotthard at the end of Sölden around 5.45. My first impression was very positive. Innsbruck airport is the most popular airport for visitors to Sölden by a long way. The resort is under an hour away in good conditions and it has a good mix of scheduled and charter flights at the weekends. Ötztal Bahnhof railway station is located at the entrance to the Ötz valley and is the nearest railway station for Sölden. Trains run on the main line from Innsbruck to Zurich but as a regional service. From the railway station there is a local bus service available (which finishes early in the evening) or local taxis and minibuses should be available for the journey up the valley.

Sölden itself is a municipality in the Ötztal valley of Tyrol, Austria. With c. 467 km², it is the largest municipality in the country. The population of 3,449 (as of 2003) is outnumbered by tourists of which 15,000 can be accommodated. With tourist bed nights running at over two million per year, the municipality is second only to Vienna as an Austrian tourist destination: inevitably Sölden’s has lost some its former villagey charm, but other attractions have been enhanced in recent years.

The main village of Sölden is at 1,368 m above sea level. The highest peak is the Wildspitze which is at 3,768 m the second highest mountain in Austria after the Großglockner.

We were spending the weekend from Thursday to Sunday with over 2500 Google staffers from all over the world. Allot of the town was booked out a and light bulbs outside restaurants and bars signalled it was Google friendly.

We decided to snowboard. A 2 hour lesson for 6 people cost €225 and hire of the equipment was €53. rather than steal all the information I will link to the fantastic website for the village, here. One thing to look for is the fantastic web cam setup.
