The Morton Stadium, Santry, Dublin is the venue for next weeks Woodie’s DIY Track and Field Championships of Ireland. They take place on the 1st and 2nd of August. Tickets are still available. This will be the last time that the current stadium will host major championships before a planned resurfacing project commences.
Since the stadium opened in 1958 the then brand new (state of the art) cinder track has always been considered the home for tacka nd field athletics events in Ireland. Some of the incredible performances include Australian legend, Herb Elliott who shattered the world record for the mile with a stunning 3 minutes 54.5 seconds performance in Santry on August 6th, 1958. Olympian, Paul Hession, set a new Irish 200m Record of 20.30 seconds at the 2007 Track and Field Championships.
Immediately after this year’s Track & Field Championships are over, both the indoor and outdoor tracks will be taken up and replaced with a Plytan Pur surface. This is a solid, poured in place system, that provides extremely high levels of durability and performance. This will bring the facility up to IAAF standards and may see Dublin host some international meetings in the near future.
