Derek Furniss sad death

derek small

Sadly the WSAF website is reporting the death of Derek Furniss who was killed in an air crash, while training with the Air Corps in Galway, last night.

Derek was a fantastic runner who trained and competed with the Club on regular basis, having just competed for Rathfarnham in the Dublin Novice Cross Country on Sunday.

I had ran with, spoken to and joked with him after the Rathfarnham 5K a few weeks back, only managing to pip hime on the line by 2 seconds My sympathies go to his young family.

Body is saying no!

Things have not been going great in August. It started well with a new PB in the Addidas 5 mile but soon my feet started hurting more than they have been. My hips are not getting better between runs and I constantly feel stiff and in pain. This week in particular after a disappointing run in the 10 mile last Saturday my calf muscles have just given up. Cross training does not seem to be working as I still feel tired and sore all the time.

This morning I did 8 miles before work and it felt like a struggle even though I did nothing yesterday. Training on Tuesday was the toughest I’ve felt in a long time.  I was well off the pace.

I feel like I’m pushing but getting shoved back with every stride forward. I’m hoping that all the core work I’ve been doing for a while now will start to show some benefits. In training I get the feeling that others think I’m sitting back and being lazy, I wish it was the case.

I’m going away with work on Friday to Ohio. I’m going to enjoy myself for a week let loose do some swimming and light gym work and see what happens. I may run the Ohio 1/2 on the 30th but at the moment the motivation is not there. The cross country season does not look too appealing right now. I’m seriously considering just cross training for a few months and then pick up in October and see what the story is. Come October most of my training will be back on the roads during the week and this could end badly.

I just want to get out and put the miles in but the body is saying no. Lets hope a list rest  can do it.
