Adidas Irish Runner 5 mile race 2009

Last saturday was the first race in the Addidas race series 2009. I wanted to go out and just run a faster time than I had in Raheny last January when I went around in 28:09. It was a new course and only my second 5 mile race.
There was plenty of warning to not go to fast in the first mile and a half but that didn’t stop anyone. I went through the first mile in under 5 minutes and I was already around 100 metres behind.
The next mile up the hill fort was tough but it was enjoyable to pass out a few people that had set out too fast down the Kyber road.
My time at 3 miles was 16:04 which is within my PB set in Wicklow last year. Mile 4 went well in 21:54 again within my PB from Dunboyne. I finished in 27:22 having slowed down a bit at the end but feeling really good overall.
Next up will be the 10 mile in August. I need to get some long runs in twice a week. Sunday alone wont cut it as my Wednesdays fee up I need to use those to get a tempo run going.
I’ve printed off a schedule and plan to work on it for the next two months. hopefully breaking that 10K 34 minute barrier by the end of the summer or at least being consistently under 35. Things are looking up.
